Dr. Johnson’s interest in global health was shaped by her service as a Peace Corps Health Extension Volunteer in The Gambia, where she worked alongside community health workers and local health teams on maternal and child health, malaria prevention and detection, nutrition, and access to care in rural communities. She also partnered with local schools on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives. Her experience developing projects around community-identified priorities fostered an appreciation for cultural humility and the importance of sustainable, ethical partnerships in global health. These experiences continued to shape her path through medical school and ultimately to residency in Internal Medicine-Pediatrics. Dr. Johnson’s interests include immigrant and refugee health, infectious disease, and global health, with a particular interest in health equity and community-driven approaches to improving health.
