Dr. Hsing-Smith’s interest in global health has been shaped by a lifelong connection to different cultures, beginning with living abroad in Shanghai, China from a young age. She has continued to seek out opportunities to travel and learn about communities and healthcare systems around the world, fostering a curiosity about how culture, social environments, and access to care influence health. These experiences have shaped her interest in global health and health equity, particularly the challenges and opportunities surrounding access to safe, timely, and equitable surgical care. As she continues her surgical training, Dr. Hsing-Smith aims to pursue opportunities to practice, conduct research, and contribute to surgical care abroad while incorporating global health into her career.
