We are thrilled to announce the launch of a new BIRCH Global Health Subcommittee, which focuses on addressing some of the challenges specific to international research. The subcommittee will be chaired by Dr. Adam Levine, Professor of Emergency Medicine and International and Public Affairs, and Associate Dean of Global Health Equity in Brown’s Division of Biology and Medicine. The first meeting convened at the end of April and will recur monthly via zoom. The Brown Innovation and Research Collaborative for Health (BIRCH) brings together the research conducted by Brown University’s Division of Biology and Medicine, Lifespan Health System, and Care New England under one administrative umbrella.

Alex Jin, PLME ‘23, a dedicated USA Intern of Health and Education for All (HAEFA), visited HAEFA operations in March 2024 as a monitoring and evaluation officer. She observed various HAEFA activities, conducted interviews, gathered information, and generated media content. She also worked at the 2 health posts in the FDMN camps, conducting exit polls to evaluate patient satisfaction and identify aspects for improvement.

Students and trainees present a broad range of projects in global health at Global Health Initiative's annual showcase.

This year’s “Best Abstract Overall” prize was awarded to Calli Dogon, MD for her abstract entitled, "Cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes in HIV-exposed uninfected versus HIV-unexposed children aged 5-8 years: the influence of maternal lipid profiles." Dr. Dogon received a $500 award.

Global Health Research Day is an annual forum hosted by the Brown University Global Health Initiative (GHI) and the Division of Biology and Medicine since 2010, highlighting the research accomplishments of students and trainees across campus. This is a flagship event for the GHI.

Joshua Smith-Sreen presented two posters at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) held in Denver, Colorado on March 3-6, 2024.

The 2024 CUGH conference was launched at 4:30pm on March 7th in Los Angeles, California. Its principal goal is to strengthen universities' contributions to global health, particularly in the fields of implementation science, knowledge translation in public health crises, and universal health coverage.

I am pleased to announce that Adam C. Levine, MD, MPH, FACEP, professor of emergency medicine and health services, policy and practice, has been appointed the inaugural Associate Dean of Global Health Equity in the Division of Biology and Medicine, effective January 1, 2024.

The Brown/Ukraine Collaboration and the Global Ultrasound Institute have awarded Daria Szkwarko, DO, MPH, Director, Global Health Faculty Development Fellowship in Family Medicine, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, a grant to continue a training program with the Ukrainian FOCUS POCUS Ultrasound Team.

In a refugee camp in Lviv, Ukraine, a white-and-red trailer with images of the Red Cross and Rod of Asclepius stands by the train tracks. For almost two weeks last summer, that trailer was home for Michael Siclari RES’88, MD, MPH, a Providence VA emergency physician who had volunteered to provide medical support for the camp.

Wilmot G. James Ph.D., an internationally recognized thought leader in biosecurity, global health, and pandemic preparedness, will join the Brown University School of Public Health faculty, and serve as a senior advisor to the School’s Pandemic Center, effective March 20th.
